Family Counselling

How we can help

Family and systemic psychotherapy, also known as family counselling, can help those in close relationships to better understand, communicate and support each other.

This type of counselling enables family members to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on family strengths, and work together to make useful changes in their relationships to improve their lives.

Family counselling helps family members to work together when something is affecting them, as one issue within the family can and will affect everyone within that family system.

Research shows family counselling is useful for children, young people and parents who may be experiencing a range of difficulties and experiences. Some families find that a few sessions are enough to resolve their difficulties, while others find that they benefit from more. Some families figure out what the main issues are and work on them separately with other counsellors within Resolve Counselling Centre and then check in with the family counsellor for a final session.

Issues in the family, be it from anger, bereavement, stress, addiction, depression, can have an effect on all family members in a multitude of ways. You may notice problems cropping up not only in the home but also at school, work or with different family members.

Family counselling can help family members learn to communicate better and work through conflicts. When it feels like these issues may be too big for you to handle, it may be time to look for support.

Some of the things that family therapists can help with are:

  • Conflicts between family members
  • Addiction problems
  • Illness or bereavement
  • Issues in school
  • Sibling Rivalry
  • Children’s behaviour problems
  • Caring for a family member with special needs
  • Issues with extended family members
  • Infidelity
  • Divorce or Separation.
